Top Ten Tips For Buying Preloved

The Autumn/Winter 2017 fashion trends are shaping up to be very good news for the Preloved wardrobe. Why? Well, rather than the old-fashioned system of one thing being "out" while another is deemed "in," designers have broken down the boundaries of what can be considered of-the-moment. Many trends are making another appearance for their third or even fourth winter season. This is a win win for the Preloved fashion lover, as not only have you come accustomed to that particular way of styling, but it's highly likely you'll already have a couple of this season items already in your wardrobe or waiting to be found in your nearest Preloved Boutique.
Our Top Ten guide to Preloved Shopping

  1. Preloved shopping is a way to meet your need for interest and stimulation met through shopping. There is nothing like that feeling when you find the perfect garment, in your size and at a fraction of the price it was originally.
  2. You just never know what you will find! These are interesting items that cannot be found or purchased in stores that sell only new merchandise. They might be items that were only available new many years, even decades ago (vintage and retro items), or perhaps even just a season ago.
  3. Preloved shopping offers the opportunity to shop consciously and discover ‘finds’ – unique and interesting pieces that aren’t available on the high street.
  4. Overcome the sizing issue. We have seen so many ladies put off buying an item because it is a size 16 when they considered themselves to be a 12. With all the different labels we stock there is so much variation in size, so take the time to search out what you like, then check the size. A large garment from Karen Millen is probably a size 12. Sizing is always a challenge and therefore we do not have all of our items in order of size.
  5. Be prepared to be different, you don't have to follow the latest trends. Shop for your own style, body shape and what makes you feel comfortable.
  6. Get into the spirit of searching for the ultimate bargain. You just may find something uniquely “you”, an item you’ll use and wear and will be able to integrate into your wardrobe immediately, something that will bring some personality, versatility and novelty to your existing collection of clothes. Or maybe you’ll find nothing of interest or value. But it’ll likely be interesting, no matter the outcome. But we guarantee when you find your hidden gem there is no better feeling.
  7. Go through items one by one. In a regular boutique or shop, you can look at a rail of clothes or a set of shelves from a distance – just a quick scan from the aisle or the doorway – and be able to tell if those are items you are interested in looking at further. Preloved clothing shopping needs time and patience.
  8. Some people have an element of snobbery when it comes to buying preowned clothes. Why ? I ask. If the clothes are clean and in good condition, surely it is better to extend the life of the garment. More and more Preloved Clothing stores are stocking quality items and like ours they do not have the charity smell that comes from a combination of mustiness and stored clothes.
  9. Don't be afraid to take something to the tailor to get it just right. Just make sure you know the difference between what can be fixed and what cannot. And be honest with yourself about how much work you are actually willing to put into it.
  10. If you like it on the hanger, then chances are you will like it on you, but you also shouldn’t shy away from the bizarre; sometimes a hanger can’t convey an item’s true potential, so get it on your body – what’s the worst that could happen? We have noticed how amazing a garment can look once it is on. Have fun, expect the unexpected and shop with an open mind, as you never know what may turn up !
